The Ira Dorsey Scholarship Endowment Fund Supports the Next Generation

Updated: Nov 20

For nearly 30 years, the Ira Dorsey Scholarship Endowment Fund, Inc. (IDSEF) has been committed to fostering academic excellence and providing financial support to prospective college students who meet specific academic and extracurricular requirements. As an extension of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.’s Xi Alpha Lambda Chapter, based in Prince William County, Virginia, IDSEF has become a pillar of educational support in the local community.

Since its founding in 1994, the IDSEF has awarded scholarships valued at over $350,000 to more than 250 high school seniors across the Washington, DC Metropolitan area. Each year, the organization distributes more than $25,000 in scholarships, ensuring that talented students have the resources they need to pursue their dreams of higher education.

Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter organization founded by African Americans in 1906, has long been at the forefront of educational initiatives, leadership development, and community outreach. With a legacy that spans 116 years, Alpha Phi Alpha now boasts approximately 800 chapters worldwide, including the Caribbean, Africa, Europe, and Asia. Its commitment to education has shaped generations of leaders, scholars, and changemakers.

Among Alpha Phi Alpha’s esteemed brotherhood are some of the most prominent figures in American history, including Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, Senator Raphael Warnock, and civil rights leaders W.E.B. DuBois and Charles Rangel. From political leaders and scholars to military heroes, entertainment icons, and sports legends, the influence of Alpha men has left an indelible mark on society.
